Waterfowl - Geese
On the Eastern Plains of
Colorado lay the resting grounds for thousands of migrating
geese. Snow geese are the most populated, with flocks of up
to fifty thousand. The most popular time to hunt Snow Geese
is during the Late Migratory Light Goose Management Season.
The early season, between November and February, is just as
and sometimes more productive than the late season. Last
year we averaged 28 geese per hunt and have shot as many as
83 in one morning. Imagine several flights of geese, each
with flocks numbering up to eight thousand, decoying in as
the sun rises. The sound of the geese is deafening, you
have to yell to communicate with anyone standing next to
you. The tornado of geese forms, and as they begin their
descent, you look upward and the motion makes you dizzy.
The geese circle down over the 1500 decoys, and as they get
closer you see geese for 20 to 200 yards in the air. Then
just as they turn into the wind to land, the guide yells,
“TAKE `EM !!”
